Reaching Mcleod Ganj, whether by air or road, is in itself such a spectacular moment that, at that moment, one finds peace just gazing at the serene mountains. Once you have taken in your fill of the fresh air and greenery, you will find that there are many things to be done in and around Dharamshala and Mcleod Ganj.
One could just walk around the small town of Mcleod Ganj or walk to Dharamshala but the roads are dangerous and have no footpaths. It’d be simpler to finding a suitable hiking trail. You can hike up to the beautiful Bhagsu Nag waterfalls enjoy the soothing waters and be back in a day. Another day trek is up to Triund hill to enjoy the silence of the top of a mountain.

There are two ways to Triund hill, one from Mcleod Ganj and one from Bhagsu and the best way to do it is a round trip covering both the paths and including the waterfall in the bargain! For the less “steeply” inclined is the short trek from Mcleod Ganj to the Tibetan Library and back. For the professional trekkers, there are treks all around the Dhauladhar range.

The sadhus of olden time went to the mountains to explore their spiritual side, and if that’s what you seek, you have come to the right place. Mcleod Ganj and Dharamshala are a fusion of Tibetan and Hindu culture. Both temples and Tibetan monasteries can be found in abundance around the area and are a must-visit. Don’t forget to say “Tashi Deley”, meaning good health, if you pass a monk on the way. There are many spiritual workshops for the really keen.

The ultimate spiritual experience would be of meeting the Dalai Lama who teaches in Dharamshala and sometimes also gives private audiences at request. He is not present in Dharamshala all year round and if your aim is only to meet him it is best to check his schedule online.
For the artistically inclined, there are art galleries and museums. The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts regularly has stage performances one can enjoy.

An important part of any travelling experience is to enjoy the local cuisine (and the stomach upset consequences to follow). You will find more than just Tibetan delicacies in the area. Bhagsu village is visited by many Israelis and Israeli food is easy to find. All types of Indian and continental foods are available to appease ones appetite.
Last but not least, shopping! The main streets of Mcleod Ganj and Bhagsu are lined with shops famous for ethnic clothes, jewellery & bags. Once can find almost anything from deities statues to beautiful handicrafts to decorate the home. The shop keepers are open to some friendly bargaining so make sure you take home a souvenir of an unforgettable trip!
